Sail Sydney - Hang onto your tiller it's going to blow. |
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA-(18-4-2003) The start of the annual Sail Sydney regatta on Botany Bay saw the Sou' East breeze reach 30 knots on the bay. With the fleet consisting of 74 boats from Laser, Laser Radial, 49'er, 29'er, 470, 420, 2.4mr, Tornados, Flying Ants and Cherubs classes, the traditional Easter regatta is set to be sailed in strong breezes for the next 3 days. The breeze saw a few competitors have to retire due to damage with the remainder of the fleets screaming across the bay in conditions that saw white caps all the way across Botany Bay.
The 49'er class Olympic hopefuls Emmet Lazich and John Harris were unable to complete race 2 with the 20-25 knot breeze causing damage to some of the 49'er and 29'er class. Kevin Lim from Malaysian the Laser class scored a 1st and 2nd in the first day of racing to be placed 1st in the fleet. Up and coming youth sailor Nathan Outerridge from the Central Coast is sailing in the 420 class with a 5,4,1 places today. Winners of the AYF Youth Sailor of the Year 2002, Elise Rechichi and Rayshelle Martin from RPYC in WA, sailed in the 420 class to be placed 2nd in the class.
Competitors have travelled from WA, Vic and the ACT as well as from all over NSW to compete in the represented classes.
